Technology & Measurement Principle Backlight Silhouette Scanning (BSS)

Backlight silhouette scanning is an optical measurement method based on high-contrast image acquisition. Objects (Seeds)  are illuminated from below, creating a clear silhouette that allows precise detection of individual objects independent of surface color or texture.

This measurement principle enables reliable object counting and supports the calculation of the thousand kernel weight (TKW) based on statistically representative sample data. Seed size is determined by measuring length, width, and projected area, providing a detailed characterization of the sample.

In addition to individual object measurement, the system evaluates size distribution within the sample, supporting quality assessment and batch comparison.
Image-based filtering algorithms allow the exclusion of dust and small debris, ensuring robust results even with heterogeneous material.

For semi-transparent objects, brightness analysis can be applied to support additional differentiation within the sample.

Technology & Measurement Principle Overhead Color Scanning (OCS)

Overhead color scanning is an optical measurement method based on top-down image acquisition under controlled illumination conditions. Seeds are imaged from above, enabling pixel-based analysis of color, brightness, and surface characteristics.

This measurement principle supports precise object detection and counting while extending the analysis beyond geometric parameters.
Color information and brightness values are evaluated to enable advanced differentiation, classification, and impurity detection within the sample.

In addition to individual object analysis, the system allows statistical evaluation of color distributions and supports the identification of foreign material or deviations in seed appearance. Image-processing algorithms ensure reproducible results across varying sample compositions.

We provide a pre-configured default setting that includes the most essential parameters for seed detection and analysis:

  • Number of good seeds
  • 1000 seed weight (grams)
  • Average seed size (mm²)
  • Proportion of undersized seeds in the sample (%)
  • Editable fields for sample ID and variety

Customers also have the option to order a service package to further customize their MARViN Seed Analyzer system. Additional configurable parameters include:

  • Length and width in millimeters
  • Area in mm² and pixels
  • Circularity and length/width ratio
  • Detection of seeds that are too small or broken
  • Statistical parameters (average, deviation, standard deviation, etc.)
  • Customizable parameters, such as impurity levels
  • Brightness distribution for each seed in up to 5 categories (e.g., very flat or transparent seeds)

All data can be calculated and analyzed using the built-in formula editor, offering a comprehensive solution for rapid and accurate Seed Analysis with the MARViN Rapid Seed Counter.
